Introduction
1st May is celebrated as Maharashtra Day every year in
India. This is the date on which the formation of the state Maharashtra
was done from the Bombay State in the year of 1960. On this day, the government
announces public holiday to all sectors such as school/colleges, offices, and
companies under the jurisdiction of the state. The Central government of the
country organizes many programs and events for celebrating this day.
Talking about the history of Maharashtra day, this day is
celebrated for commemorating the formation of state from Bombay State. In
India, the states were defined by the boundaries on the basis of languages. The
Bombay State was formed as a consequence of The States Reorganization Act. The
Bombay State was composed of different areas where Marathi, Konkani, Gujarati
and Kutchi languages were spoken. Later, the Bombay State was divided into two
states for which The Sanyukta Maharashtra Samiti was leading the movement.
These two states were Maharashtra and Gujarat. This act came into action on 1st May
1960 and from then this day is celebrated as Maharashtra Day or Maharashtra Din
in the whole country.
In Maharashtra, people celebrate this day with joy and
pride. Many political, traditional and entertainment events and activities are
organized on this day. People give homage to the legend freedom fighters
of India who were from Maharashtra on this day such as Chatrapati Shivaji
Maharaj, Lokamanya Tilak, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar etc. The school and colleges
have a holiday on this day but they celebrate the Maharashtra Day by organizing
events such as essay writing, speech, elocution, quiz, debate, and drawing
competitions.
Nowadays, many youngsters feel proud to go on rallies on
bikes with the flag of the state. They celebrate this day by those bike rallies
but they do not think that it is not the way to celebrate this day. They do not
care about the speed of their vehicle, signals on the road and keep moving here
and there but it creates many problems like traffic jam issues, accidents and
much more. People should first understand the meaning of this day and
celebrate it in that way. Feeling proud of our state is not a bad thing
but when that pride is hurting someone physically or mentally then surely it is
bad. People send wishes to each other on social sites by sending messages,
quotes, images, SMS on Maharashtra Day etc. Towns and cities are decorated with
the banners and hoardings of Maharashtra Day. There are many songs which are
composed in such a way that they elaborate this day’s celebration.
Conclusion
Maharashtra Day is celebrated for the creation
of the State. 1st, May is also celebrated as World
Workers Day across the globe. Maharashtra’s people have two reasons to
celebrate the day enthusiastically.
